What Does a Website Grade Actually Measure?

A website's grade is a diagnostic starting point, not a prediction of rankings or sales. It checks whether the technical basics are in place: whether pages load quickly, whether search engines can read them, whether the layout works on a phone and whether the connection is secure. Slow, hard-to-find or unsafe-feeling sites give visitors a reason to leave before they see an offer, so fixing what fails here removes friction. It does not tell you whether your offer, your copy or your proof will persuade anyone; that takes a conversion review.

Performance: Speed Is a Conversion Metric

Every extra second of load time increases the chance a visitor leaves before the page finishes loading. Poor performance can also contribute to weaker search outcomes, since Google's page experience signals include Core Web Vitals. Two caveats matter. The scores here are lab data from a simulated mobile device, not measurements from your real visitors, and Google recommends judging Core Web Vitals on field data where it exists. And speed is one signal among many: a fast page with a weak offer still will not convert.

SEO: Can Search Engines Find You?

SEO checks whether the basics are in place for search engines to understand and rank your content — title tags, meta descriptions, heading structure, and whether the page can be crawled at all. Missing these doesn't just hurt rankings; some of them (like a missing title tag) mean the page may not show up in search results at all.

Mobile: Where Most of Your Traffic Actually Is

For most service businesses, the majority of website visitors are on a phone. A site that only works well on desktop is quietly losing the majority of its traffic to frustration — text too small to read, buttons too close together to tap accurately, or layouts that don't adapt to a narrow screen.

Security: The Trust Layer

HTTPS, safe JavaScript libraries, and security headers don't just protect data — browsers actively warn visitors away from sites that fail these checks, and search engines factor security into rankings too.

What to Do With a Low Score

The "What should I do next" list on your results ranks every failing check by how much it's worth — fix the highest-impact items first rather than trying to tackle everything at once. If your score is low across the board, that usually points to a site that needs a rebuild rather than a patch.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What does the Website Grader check?

It runs a live scan of your site using Google's PageSpeed Insights engine and scores four areas: Performance (how fast your pages load), SEO (whether search engines can find and understand your content), Mobile (how usable your site is on a phone), and Security (HTTPS, safe scripts, and security headers). Together these make up your score out of 100.

Is this free?

Yes, completely free, no sign-up required. Enter a URL and get your full score breakdown immediately.

How accurate is the score?

The grader uses the same Lighthouse engine that powers Google's own PageSpeed Insights tool and Chrome DevTools, so the underlying data is the same you'd get running an audit yourself. Scores can vary slightly between runs since they depend on live network conditions at the moment of the scan.

What if my score is low?

A low score just tells you where the opportunity is. The 'What should I do next' section on your results ranks every failing check by impact, so you know what to fix first. If you'd rather have someone else handle it, the free audit offer on this page gets a real person looking at your results.

Do you store the URLs people scan?

No. The scan runs entirely in your browser against Google's public API — we only see your details if you choose to submit the optional contact form for a follow-up.
