Why "Vibe Coding" Won't Replace Your Web Developer (But It Will Change What You Pay For)

AI can generate a landing page in an afternoon. It can't tell you which part of your project will fail under real traffic. Here's what's actually coming off your invoice — and what isn't.

Type a sentence into an AI tool and watch a working webpage appear. No code, no developer, no invoice. It feels like magic — and for a certain kind of project, it basically is.

That’s “vibe coding”: describing what you want in plain language and letting an AI generate the site or app for you. It’s real, it’s improving fast, and if you’ve been quoted a developer’s day rate recently, it’s tempting to wonder if you need one at all.

You still do. But not for the reasons you’d expect — and not for what you’re currently paying for.

Quick answer: AI prompt tools are genuinely good enough for simple, self-contained projects — a landing page, a static portfolio, a one-off campaign site. They are not yet trustworthy for anything that stores customer data, takes payments, connects to your other systems, or has to survive real traffic. The boilerplate on your invoice is getting cheaper. The judgment isn’t.

What AI website builders are actually good at

Give an AI prompt tool a clear description and it will hand you a landing page, a simple booking form, or a one-off campaign site faster than any developer could quote it. For a straightforward brief with no real logic behind it, that’s a legitimate way to move fast and spend less.

Where it runs out of road

The gap shows up the moment your site has to do something specific and keep doing it correctly.

Performance under real traffic. A generated page that looks fine with one visitor can buckle under fifty. Someone has to know why — and fix it without breaking the three other things connected to it.

Security. A booking form that stores customer data, a checkout that touches payment details, a login that gates member content — each one is a place where a generic AI output can quietly leave a door open. The OWASP Top Ten has catalogued these same failure modes for years, and a prompt doesn’t know which of them apply to your build. You won’t know either, until it’s a problem.

Integrations. Your CRM, your payment processor, your email tool, your inventory system — a real business runs on five or six systems talking to each other. Prompted code rarely accounts for how they actually behave together.

What happens when it breaks. AI-generated code can be difficult to read, even for the AI that wrote it. When something goes wrong six months in, you need a person who can open the file and understand it — not start over.

None of this means the tools are bad. Developers themselves are split on how far to trust them — Stack Overflow’s annual developer survey is worth reading on that point, because the people using these tools most are also the most specific about where they stop. It means they’re built for a different job than the one most businesses actually need done.

The part of your invoice that’s about to shrink

Here’s the shift worth paying attention to: the boilerplate — the repetitive scaffolding that used to eat a developer’s early hours — is genuinely faster to produce now, AI-assisted, on our end too. That part of the cost is coming down, and it should.

What doesn’t get cheaper is the judgment. Deciding what the site actually needs to do for your business. Catching the integration that will fail under load before it fails in front of a customer. Making the architecture call that saves you a rebuild in eighteen months.

That’s the part you’re really paying a developer for. It always was — the boilerplate was just harder to separate from it before.

What this means if you’re planning a website or app right now

If the project is simple — a single landing page, a static portfolio, something with no moving parts — a prompt tool might genuinely be enough. Try it. See if it holds up.

If the project needs to handle customer data, connect to other tools, process payments, or scale past a handful of visitors, bring in someone who can own the parts an AI can’t yet be trusted with: security, integration, and what happens when something breaks at 11pm on a Tuesday. Most businesses land somewhere in between — and that’s exactly where a developer working with AI tools, instead of being replaced by them, gets you a better result for less than the old day-rate math would suggest.
